Clippers Owner Donald Sterling and Racism in Sports

It has come to be known that Donald Sterling is our new recent racist. Yes, you are reading this correctly. If you have no clue as to who he is, then let me clarify: Donald Sterling is the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. He is the man that has owned the former punchline of the NBA. He is the man that has been the leader of the true-to-life Bad News Bears. So, now I see that I have the opportunity to type on my keyboard to address yet another situation of racism.

I’m not sure as to how others feel, but I think these situations are becoming more of a comedy of errors due to lack of knowledge. More on that later.

If you have been anywhere near “Black Twitter”, you may have been paying attention to the outrage that has shown up everywhere. Hell, there has been mention of people not watching the game. To take it further, some people want the players to boycott the game. As the situation thickens with a plot thicker than gravy, things don’t look good for Donald Sterling. It may be that the fecal matter has hit the ceiling fan for one of America’s most infamous slumlords.

Wait, you didn’t know Donald Sterling was a slumlord? Oh, damn. You all REALLY know very little about this man.

Donald Sterling, The Awful Owner

I hope people are not upset at his racist comments. Well, let me backtrack: the main reason why most are upset is because people are not used to Don Sterling. If they knew anything about this man, this would be a “ho hum” moment (like it is for me). Instead, this story is actually trending and catching traction. It is impressive how things take a turn when people finally find out about things that has been apparent for years.

Newsflash: the main reason most people are upset now is because they did not know about Donald Sterling BACK THEN.

Donald Sterling, for who he is, has been known for being the dirty douche bag of NBA ownership. Let me break this down for you all (courtesy of Real Clear Sports List of 10 Most Despised Owners):

In Baylor’s suit, Sterling’s numerous horrible comments and business practices came to light, such as his telling Baylor he wanted to fill his team with “poor black boys from the South and a white head coach.” Which is nothing compared to housing discrimination claims (Sterling made his money as a slumlord) in which Sterling allegedly said “black tenants smell and attract vermin,” and “Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building.” [1]

He’s been sued several times for sexual harassment and racial discrimination, including by former GM Elgin Baylor [2]. So, for all of the madness his commentary is causing now is not even a piss in the proverbial pan of sport’s excrement.

I mean, this is the same guy that refused to pay for former Clippers coach Kim Hughes pricey, and necessary, surgical procedure for prostate cancer [3]. Eventually, it was paid for by former Clippers players Corey MaggetteMarko JaricChris Kaman and Elton Brand.

America, this is your Donald Sterling.

Donald Sterling and the Racial Comedy of Errors

To research further into the racial comedy that is Donald Sterling, we can trace back as far as the 80’s. According to Lee Perlman, Donald Sterling failed to acquire Rollie Massimino over an issue of “ethical beliefs”:

Phipps, half asleep, sat up on his bed and asked what went wrong. “Here’s this guy,” Massimino said, “and he has this blonde bimbo with him, they have a bottle of champagne, they’re tanked. And Don looks at me and he says, ‘I wanna know why you think you can coach these niggers.’” [4]

This struck a chord with Massimino. Hell, it also struck a chord with me. It made me laugh at the sheer asinine fuckery that is Donald Sterling. He may be a dirty douche bag, but at least he is genuine about the bloody mess he is.

Donald Sterling Boycott Looming?

If the players actually tried to boycott, then I would be thoroughly impressed. In this day and age of “building one’s brand” and “40 Million Dollar Slaves” (peace to William C. Rhoden), those type of bold moves would be quite surprising. Players nowadays do not have such social responsibility and human equality weighing on their brains. More than anything, they are making sure they can take their brands globally. Thus, I would be impressed by the sheer balls of a boycott by ANY player over ANY issue.

Especially if the issue deals with morality situations and not personal pledges.

The Skinny on Donald Sterling

Donald Sterling is the man with the racist master plan. And to think that we were just getting over Clive Bundy (I’m lying). Yet, this is just another sad example of their never being a post racial society. We, as a people, need to start understanding the people that we are dealing with. Some of these “closet racists” never been in the closet. We just never took the time to kick. it in their houses.
