Wisconsin GOP Senator Thinks Being a Single-Parent on Welfare is Child Abuse

Don’t ever say that the GOP doesn’t like children. It has become quite apparent, that they will do whatever it takes to protect them. They’re against women having abortions; they’re against women using contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancies; they’re against gay couples adopting children; and hell, they’re even against gay marriage just on the off chance that gay couples will be able to conceive children through gay sex. So yeah, don’t ever let it be known that the GOP doesn’t care about children; nope, not ever. Now, according to what I’m hearing over at Angry Black Lady, at least one politician in Wisconsin is taking it a step further. Uh-huh, from what I’m hearing, there’s a bill being introduced that likens children in single-parent homes, to being victims of child abuse. Yep, if you’re a single parent — at least in Wisconsin — you’re quite naturally a criminal:

Senate Bill 507, introduced by Senator Grothman (R-West Bend), would require the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to emphasize non marital parenthood is a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect. Single parents make up a third of all Wisconsin parents […]

[…] Those who follow Senator Grothman claims over the years shouldn’t be surprised by this bill. In 2011, he posted his views on families on his legislative website under the title “How The United States and The State of Wisconsin Are Working to Encourage Single Motherhood and Discouraging Children in 2-Parent Families.”

In it, his premise is that the “Left and the social welfare establishment want children born out of wedlock because they are far more likely to be dependent on the government.” He supports this argument by claiming that single mothers are much better off financially staying single, due to programs like low-income housing assistance, food stamps, and day care, than they are married. He concludes that the rise in single motherhood has therefore been driven by all the great financial benefits single, low-income mothers receive, rather than a complex interaction of changing society, evolving cultural norms, earlier sexual activity among teens who use birth control sporadically, systemic discrimination, and other factors.

Don’t worry, this is just one state. It’s not like others will follow with similar legislation sorta like how they did with collective bargaining and anti-immigration legislation at all. If you’re a liberal like me, there’s no need to put together plans of building a moon colony now that Newt Gingrich doesn’t look to be in a position to build one as president himself. But just in case you’re fearful of being labeled a criminal by virtue of being a single parent. Take my advice, sponsor a starving kid in a third world country; seriously, doing so makes you look better as a person should you  have go to trial.
