Former NCAA Heisman Trophy winner, Texas native, and NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel has been indicted by a Texas grand jury on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge. Manziel is no stranger to controversy since entering the NFL. However, this week, his already spiralling professional football career has taken a major hit.
This from NFL.com:
A Texas grand jury has indicted ex-Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel on an assault charge after his ex-girlfriend accused him of domestic violence.
The Heisman Trophy winner and former Texas A&M star was indicted Tuesday on a charge of misdemeanor assault related to family violence. The Class A misdemeanor carries up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
Manziel’s ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, told Dallas police that Manziel repeatedly hit her and threatened to kill her during a night out on Jan. 30.
Crowley alleged that Manziel accosted her several times at a Dallas hotel and later struck her when they drove back to her apartment in Fort Worth.
In a statement released Tuesday, Manziel’s attorney said that his client will plead not guilty.
“We certainly respect the decision of the grand jury but of course they only hear part of the case: What the D.A. chooses to share with them. We don’t know what that was. This case will now be assigned to a court in Dallas County where the parties are able to join the issue,” Jim Darnell, lead counsel for Manziel, said.
“Johnny will certainly plead ‘not guilty’ and we believe the evidence will support that plea. Out of respect for Ms. Crowley, we will not try the case in the press. We do, however, believe that Johnny will be acquitted at the conclusion of the case.”
The Cleveland Browns cut Manziel in March, and two agents and all of his endorsers have dropped him.
I always appreciated the way Johnny Manzeil embraced his inner Negro. So now that Johnny Manziel has a criminal record, can we, the black delegation, trade for him? I mean, a white kid catching heat from white folks for hanging out and partying with black celebrities deserves consideration. I mean, why not? He’s friends with Drake and Lil’ Wayne.
After all, it’s not like white professional athletes ever get in trouble and are banished from making an honest living after making errors in judgement like punching out a girlfriend in an elevator like Ray Rice; or spanking a kid like Adrian Peterson. It just doesn’t happen, right? Nope, it never happens.
Nope, it never happens.
Having said that, perhaps if we were able to work out a trade for Johnny Manziel and he officially becomes a black man, he could be crucified by the media and women’s rights advocates on social media. Because, from where I’m sitting, it would appear that his whiteness is a force field.
