Days ago, a great confidant by the name of Anthony Haskins noted that he wasn’t going to watch anymore videos of black men being killed by police. When I read this, I was fully supportive. From my perspective, watching videos of people being killed can have a negative effect on you. With so much happening in this country (and the world), replaying scenes of death and destruction disrupts the mind and numbs the soul. Plus, the last thing this country needs is an apathetic Black man that is “getting used to it”. Thus, I agreed because I didn’t want Anthony “getting used to it”.
Oh, by the way: “getting used to it” is a reference to “getting used to seeing black bodies become soulless by cop killings”.
Yet, I may just be the master of selling medicine that I’m not willing to take. You see, I took the plunge. I actually made time out of my life to watch the video that Rakeyia Scott (Keith Lamont Scott’s wife) filmed. I wanted to see how things developed. I wanted to see for myself just how things actually happened between the police and Keith Lamont Scott. I wanted to take it all in just as I wisely told others NOT to do.
Now I realize that I made a grave mistake. This was one of the worst things I have seen this year.

Watching and listening to everything that happened in this video was an extremely mind numbing experience. It seemed as if Rakeyia had to actually talk to the cops like school children. She kept repeating different information to them that they consistently ignored. She kept giving out information on the status of her husband’s health (he had a traumatic brain injury or a TBI) and weapon possession (he had none). She also kept telling the husband to get out the car so the police could relax. With all of this going on, she was still there filming the entire situation.
Of course, she was going to film it. In today’s climate, trusting the police to admit to wrongdoing is like trusting Donald Trump not to say something irritatingly outrageous. You can never get your hopes up.
The worst part of it all is that none of her actions actually saved her husband. She said all the right things to keep him alive. Yet and still, they shot him dead. Right when that happened, she because furious with expletives (“He better not be fucking dead!”). And what would you expect from a wife that is trying to save her husband’s life? Everything would have worked out if the cops would have used better judgment.

The problem with the police is that they DID use their better judgment: they were out hunting black men. There is no way to truly excuse a situation where a wife is videotaping you while she simultaneously plays negotiator better thanKevin Spacey. All of that and Scott still ended up dying? With all that is given, the police had no intention of letting him live. The police planned on killing Keith Lamont Hill whether anyone liked it or not.

Rakeyia Scott did the right thing: she created the visual evidence so the truth can be seen with no filter. She pleaded, instructed, and informed her husband and the police. Yet, the police did what they wanted to do. Their entire goal was to claim the physical body of another black man with little regard to civility or any civilians. Sadly, all of this was caught on video. Thus, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that I will never watch another video of this nature every again.
Our black bodies are consistent entertainment in life; I don’t need to see a soulless black body become the embodiment of death.
