Anti-Gun Mayor James Schiliro Arrested; Allegedly Used Gun to Force 20-Year-Old to Have Sex

I got into a debate recently with someone who identifies with the right-wing pro-gun crowd, who is opposed to new gun control laws. My argument was that in the context of the gun control debate, the phrase “responsible gun owner” used by pro-gun types to suggest that said gun owners are above criminal activity was false. Of course my pro-gun pal didn’t agree; to him, being a responsible gun owner meant that one is incapable of employing the use of a gun to commit a crime. Yep, because the only source of guns for criminals are through illicit means; yeah, criminals do not legally purchase firearms. Absurd? Yes. Anyone with common sense will tell you it isn’t true, and it’s beyond logic and reason.

Oh, and speaking of which – how about one of those “responsible gun owners” who went to jail recently for committing a few crimes while employing the use of a gun? Yep, how about said “responsible gun owner” being an actual mayor, and a member of the organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns? Yes, I’m sure his recent actions makes New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg proud. But aside from that, what makes me really laugh — aside from his actual crimes — is the fact that he is a Republican. And what does that have to do with anything? Well, read the following.

This from The Inquisitor:

Marcus Hook, PA — A member of the Michael Bloomberg-sponsored gun control organization “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” has been arrested and charged in connection with a handgun incident at his home.

James Schiliro, a.k.a. Jay Schiliro, the mayor of Marcus Hook, a small town in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, faces charges of official oppression, reckless endangerment, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, and furnishing a minor with alcohol. He surrendered to authorities on Thursday morning, and his attorney declared that “we intend to fight these charges.”

Schiliro, 38, allegedly ordered a local police officer to bring a 20-year-old male friend to his home, where the mayor plied him with alcohol, and made sexual advances which the man refused. Schiliro allegedly brandished several handguns and fired one of them into the floor in an apparent attempt to intimidate the young man, who reportedly was in fear of his life.

The mayor was freed on $50,000 bail and told to stay away from the alleged victim and give up his stash of firearms.

Schiliro, a Republican, has refused requests by town officials to step down, and he intends to continue to run in the May 21 contested mayoral primary. Mayors Against Illegal Guns reportedly dropped him immediately from the list of coalition supporters when this news emerged, however, and he no longer appears on the website of the organization of approximately 800 mayors, mostly Democrats, which is led by NYC Mayor Bloomberg. Okay, so am I the only one who thinks this is hilariously hypocritical? Don’t get me wrong, allegedly forcibly coercing someone into having sex with you is a definite no. Seriously, it’s almost as bad as slipping a Molly into the drink of an unsuspecting companion in an attempt to have sex without their consent. You know, sort of like what Rick Ross endorses? Yes, it’s kind of rape-ish; and, definitely not a good look Mr. Schiliro. But something tells me this guy has been doing this for some time now.

That aside, it could be argued that the accused in this case (before now) was one of those “responsible gun owners,” who by virtue of being a Republican is above committing an alleged lascivious crime. Heck, given the current debate on marriage equality, it’s safe to assume that it’s a crime for any Republican politician to even feel the urge to have a romp in the sack with someone of the same sex. But hey, we all have skeletons in our closets, right? Luckily for “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” and the GOP, Schiliro isn’t an easily recognizable figure on the national stage. I’m not sure if there’s really a point to this post. However, if I had to pick one, I’d say that there are members of a certain political party who profess to be the moral authority of this country, who are not above being someone with the ability to be as hypocritical as the next person.
