Women Raping Men – The Strange Truth

cierra_rossWhenever I think of the rape culture that permeates within this society, I think of how men help promote the lunacy. It makes me think of that tweet Cee Lo Green produced to justify his imprudent behavior. It also makes me believe of the trials and tribulations women suffer at the hands of men. It just reminds me of how our society can arrogantly promote masculine-affiliated madness. Thus, I tend to see rape culture as a problem promoted by machismo.

What I did not expect was to see women emulating this same behavior. Ciera Ross, a mother of two, has been arrested and charged with raping a man [1]. It all happened when Ross was riding around with a friend. After that, the story becomes something out of a noir novel:

Ross, 25, stopped and asked the 33-year-old man if he wanted a ride. The man took the offer, but Ross’ true intentions became evident when she pulled a gun on the man. She forced the man to go to the backseat and told him to have sex with her friend. The man pleaded for the women to stop after they made him fondle the woman’s breasts and butt.

Ross then ordered the man to take his clothes off and her friend began to assault him sexually. The women also took $200 and credit cards from the man.

The male victim was able to escape when he saw a taxi cab and ran from the car naked. The cab driver allowed the man to use his cellphone to take a picture of Ross’ license plate. Chicago police arrested Ross on Sept. 3 and the victim identified her as the assailant. [2]

Just like that, my expectations of rape culture changed. Well, sort of at least.

Women Raping Men: The Truth

To be less assuming, men being raped happens more often than one would believe. According to the Center for Disease Control’s national survey on sexual violence, more than 5 million men in the United States have been “made to penetrate” someone else in their lifetime, whether by coercion, intimidation, or because they were incapacitated [3]. And yet, we haven’t even gotten to the “interesting part”. A recent study of sexual violence found that women by age 18 were almost equally as likely as men to commit sexual abuse (at 48 percent and 52 percent, respectively) [4]. Therefore, rape needs to be looked at beyond gender.

Women Raping Men: The Confusion

There is a reason for the confusion dealing with women raping men: male arousal. For one thing, ejaculation is confused with sexual desire; yet, it can be an extension of one’s spinal reflex [5]. To make sense of it all, a man “busting a nut” does not always signal that he had a wild time in the sack. There are times where ejaculation happens due to seizures [6]. With that said, male arousal cannot be used as a signifier for sexual desire.

Another point of confusion is the fact that many men don’t believe that they can be raped. I know this may sound strange or off-putting, but many men believe that you “can’t rape the willing”. In so many male minds, women raping men is inconceivable. For many of us, women raping men could be alleviated by a six pack and a turkey sandwich with tomato from Firehouse Subs. Thus, many men find it hard to conceptualize that they could indeed bye sexually violated.

Women Raping Men: The Finale

The fact of the matter is this: women raping men happens. Yet, it is the male belief system that truly holds back on the help that men may need. It happens often enough for it to be an issue. Still, the mentality behind believing in its existence does not help the situation. In the end, rape culture affects both males and females; we all might as well treat it has a human issue.
