When you stated unequivocally that black is not a monolithic thing, it pointed out, from my perspective as a so-called “white” man with many black friends and family, that too many people of all so-called races have that monolitic belief. It reminds me of a column I read years ago in the former St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, by a black man named Bill Maxwell, where he talked about the issue of education. In it, he asked, “If getting an education is acting white, then what is acting black?” That one question has stuck with me all these years, since the mid-90’s, and it seems is still relevant today, 20 years later.

Before I start rambling, let me end this. Thank you for writing this column. I look forward to more of your work!
