The only thing this article and many like it dismisses is the chance that Rihanna was in fact the aggressor. As a woman, I am made to feel like any time a man puts his hands on me it is automatically his fault, even if I start it – so it’s fine for me to hit him and he just has to take it? This has made abuse of men by women into a laugh-off event, even though it starts a good portion of domestic violence incidents for which men are solely blamed. I am not immune – in the heat of the moment I’ve shoved a loved one, and he shoved back. This did not automatically not make him a bad guy, it made me a bad girlfriend and the relationship soon ended. Chris Brown went way too far, obviously but to blame one partner and excuse the other without having been there adds to the problem of women who think they can handle their anger through violence and never be questioned. Nobody should be hitting anybody, and to make exceptions because of gender is wrong – but care must be made not to blame both parties in every instance either. It’s tricky dealing with he said/she said incidents like this, which is why the whole “taking sides” thing bothers me so much.

Look at it from her perspective. She is a rich powerful black woman. The pool of eligible black men is incredibly small and as long as she sticks with a black guy she is going to be treated like crap anyways so she is just making the logical decision by sticking with him. If she really wanted to be in a relationship with someone who is successful and well mannered she wouldn’t date a rapper.
