White Comedian in Blackface Proves that White Folks at BYU Don’t Know or Care About Black History

Feb 09, 2012 33 Comments by

So I got an email from a reader this morning; a reader who happens to be white. After reading my recent post about the politics of the fake “War on Religion” being waged by president Obama, he felt compelled to write me. No big deal because this happens quite often; yep, it’s not uncommon to get email responses to some of the stuff I say on this site. So anyway, Mr. Random White Guy decides to email me and suggest I join his side against president Obama, and his “War On Religion”.

Clearly I don’t have to tell you that “his side” meant getting cozy with right-wing nutjobs in an activist setting. OK, so I read his spill, and what really struck me was one line in his sales pitch. He said that I as a Black man, should be against president Obama and his ruling that mandates coverage for contraceptives by Catholic-run institutions. His reasoning? Because as a Black man, I should be concerned about the “Black Genocide” that is the abortion of Black babies. Yep, imagine that; apparently Obama is killing Black babies now. See wha’happen when you don’t pay attention?

Now my first instinct was to go smooth the fuck off and ask him where was he and his concern for “Black Genocide” about four hundred odd years ago when Black folk were brought to this country in chains. But I decided against that because to do so would not have been fair. Yep, never mind the fact that he probably wasn’t alive.

Instead, I asked him if he was concerned about said “Black Genocide,” why then he didn’t spend his energy to end it on the continent of Africa since he has a newfound love for Black people. You know what he told me? He said, that if the government would stop funding Planned Parenthood, then maybe those funds could be reallocated to ending “Black Genocide” in Africa. I really got heated then, but I decided to give him a pass because it’s Black History Month, and I ain’t trying to sin by cussin’ out white folks. But hell, who knew Planned Parenthood was standing in the way of saving the lives of Black folks in Africa. Hell, it makes me wonder why I even bought a We Are The World t-shirt that went to buying some starving kid in Africa some Ramen Noodles. You mean there are millions of people dying everyday in the Sudan, and it’s due to the gov’t wasting money by funding Planned Parenthood?

I swear, y’all white folks right-wing nutjobs have all the answers.

Speaking of which, did y’all hear about the white comedian in Blackface walking around the campus of BYU asking folks about Black History Month? Yep, I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right: his punk ass would’ve never pulled that shit at an HBCU. Nah son, we ain’t that post-racial. But then again, maybe we are? I mean I’ve always wondered if white people in America took Black History Month seriously, or whether they even cared. My guess has always been that collectively, a vast majority of them didn’t. I mean it’s not like that white folks are going out of their way to give Black people jobs this month as messed up as the economy is. But stand-up comic, Dave Ackerman in the following video has helped me to realize that I’m right. Sure he wore Blackface in Black History Month which I’m sure will make some of my cousins upset. However, what he exposes with his “fighting ignorance with ignorance,” campaign, in one video, shows that some people truly just don’t care or wish to. Now that I’ve seen this video, I can honestly say, that I wished I would have cursed out Mr. Random White Guy who emailed me this morning, for his ignorant slaes pitch.

You may think that a white man wearing Blackface may be overboard and insulting as Ackerman does in the following video. But since there are many white folks who refuse to listen to Black folks like myself and others when it comes to racism. Maybe this is what it will take for them to get it.

Love may conquer hate, but maybe there’s something to ignorance fighting ignorance:

RiPPa is the creator, publisher, and editor-in-chief of The Intersection of Madness & Reality. As a writer, he uses his sense of humor, sarcasm, and sardonic negro wit to convey his opinion. Yes, he's Black; yes, he's proud; and yes, he says it loud. As such, he's often misunderstood.

The dude who emailed you has bought into the whole eugenics lie that equated Sanger with Hitler, and I don’t waste an ounce of energy on those fools. To use it in the name of Black genocide is utter hypocrisy. I remind people like that…that if they should “win” their fight against PPFA in the name of “life”, are they going to redouble those same efforts on stopping our ceaseless wars and on fighting the death penalty? No, they do not care about Black babies, or the fact that poverty affects families of color disproportionately in this country. They’re tools. Period.

As for the dude pulling Blackface routine…I haven’t been able to make myself watch him. The very gimmick of Blackface to prove a point -in my personal opinion- is insult to injury, with respect to racism …and in particular given that it’s Black History Month. Maybe he actually *is* raising awareness, but I think he could have done it just fine without the gimmicky bullshit. And how much more powerful might any awareness raising be about Black History coming from a White dude actually being intelligent about the topic? There is a reason Tim Wise is generally taken seriously. He doesn’t mock the problem.

    • VivaPlannedParenthood

So who founded planned parenthood? Why did she start planned parenthood? What was the objective?

I am for planned parenthood because you will never understand why poverty affects families of color disproportionately. So I say keep killing them, kill them all. If you aren’t intelligent enough to realize that if you are poor, having a baby will make you poorer if you have to feed and care for them as opposed to someone in society, then kill them all.

If you need help finding an abortion center funded by the taxpayers of this country let me know, I will even drive you there.  Too bad you can’t simply use your brain as it has probably have been fucked out and not get pregnant with little ones you demand someone else takes care of to begin with. But oh well, with that said, kill em all. Abort those future dependants on society.

It is cheaper to abort a black baby today then to support it for life. Abort them. Abortion is good.

You are really racist… you need to mellow out a little.  You throw a lot of hypotheticals out there: “his punk ass would’ve never pulled that shit at an HBCU.” yea of course not (whatever HBCU is).  All the black people would crap themselves.  Instead of pouring all of your hate and malice (like Sauron of LOTR) into this website why don’t you go help black people learn how to behave.  Just look at detroit:  the blackest city in America and the place is falling apart.  Law abiding people are literally running for their lives out of the City.  The following is a very interesting article on how bad it has gotten.  Even a nice young black woman who wants so desperately to help her race out has called it quits:
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704292004575230532248715858.html

Anyway, good luck with your hate, I’m sure it will get you a record deal or on a basketball team or something…

    • Prosey

I’m curious. How on earth do you equate RiPPa’s pointing out something really obvious to anyone with eyes and ears as racist? I mean honestly, what he’s pointing out is racism. Pointing out racism bluntly tends to only offend people who are feeling a little defensive about their own hangups.

      • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

Because it isn’t just: “this is what happened and it was wrong for these reasons”.  Its “ignorant white people this”, “white people are no good because they don’t care enough about black history month.”  “White people want to take away food stamps” on and on and on.

You’re right I do have a hangup about living in this society that praise black people for every blessed thing then looks the other way when black people do something terrible.  “Oh wow black guy 1 didn’t crap his pants, lets give him a scholarship.” versus “lets ignore the fact that black people, per capita cause way more problems than any other group in modern America.”  That’s my hangup.

Also, black people enslaved other black people and sold them to clever white people who said “jee i can buy a slave in Africa for x and sell him in the new world for y and make z.”  Its a calculation any reasonable person would make in that day and age (including other africans).  The pyramids were built with all kinds of slaves.  You could say Africa invented slavery (clever bunch).

Also, plenty of blacks in the US owned slaves as well.  Its so annoying when white people in general get blamed for bringing black people over here.  Trust me, if those traders had known what a headache it would cause over the next 300 years, they probably would have left black people in Mama Africa so the Afrikaners could deal with them.

      • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

I’m not trying to be mean i’m just calling it like it is.  Did you read the article?  Whether you agree with it or not it is undeniably interesting.

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

You not knowing what an HBCU actually is, proves the point of this post: some of you are ignorant. Your whole comment itself serves as evidence that racists (like yourself) are pretty fucking stupid and unintelligent. I suppose the recent study that showed the link between I.Q. and and racism, prejudice, and bigotry happens to be correct. Thanks for helping me out on this one, sir.

      • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

You don’t have to get into name calling.  I may be a little racist but everyone is.  The problem I have is having this black history month crap shoved down my throat my entire life.

I may be racist but i’m not stupid.  In fact I am smart enough to realize that not all black people are like you and rippa who hate white people just because they “don’t care enough about black history month”.  Sure I hate some black people just like I hate some white people and I hate a lot of middle eastern people too (terrorists immediately come to mind) but the difference between an Indian (or white or asian or w/e) is that they are content to be judged by their content of character and don’t need some annual media blitz to remind America why they shouldn’t be hated.

Black people on the other hand do require a constant PR campaign to convince everyone “hey black people aren’t so bad… see”.  Its a complete joke.

Per capita Black people are:poorer, cause more crime, have more children out of wedlock, and are receive more government support than any other group today…

They also: reduce property values, are unequivocally racist (they hate pretty much everyone including other black people, especially if they are gay), don’t really pay much in taxes (i don’t have the figure in front of me so it doesnt go in the per capita list), and make schools and other public areas unsafe.

Its not about being racist, just look at the numbers.

Think of it this way: if 90% of apples you ate made you sick, would you stop eating apples?  Same thing with black people, practically every time every time black people get together bad stuff goes down ie stabbing shooting what have you.

Did you even read the article?

        • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

You might be the first person to visit this site to admit to being racist. Kudos to you! However, I do want to point out that there are no varying degrees of racism. You admited to being a “little racist,” but that’s like saying you’re “half pregnant.” Bottom line it’s just silly.

          • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

haha by your logic everyone is racist, refer to my apple analogy.

What is just silly is your inability to look at the man in the mirror and really think about who is responsible for black plight.  Is it that characature of a white slave master whipping these noble africans for no good reason?

Or is it perhaps the reality that black people just haven’t gotten their act together?

Your unwillingness to even engage in a genuine debate about modern race relations shows the quality of your argument.  It is flawed and based on ingrained belief that nothing is your fault and if somethign doesnt go your way, there was a fat rich white guy sitting at a desk somewhere who is responsible.

Black people will never attain the success the desire until they stop playing the victim and get serious about competing in the modern market economy.

That means going to school, working hard, staying out of trouble, getting a job, working hard some more, not getting someone pregnant until your ready, and instilling the same work ethic in your children.  It sounds simple but it is hard and I will admit that but constantly complaining won’t get you anywhere either.

          • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

Also, there are varying degrees of racist.  There is your class 10 racist: I hate everyone who isnt like me, lets go burn some black peoples houses.

and there is the class 1 racist: oh no here comes a group of rowdy african american youthes.  Perhaps I should cross the street.  Oh I can’t believe i just thought that, how racist of me.  I will be sure to vote Obama extra hard in 2012.

See, that was an easy argument to shut down.  Come on, I really want to know what the black community’s response is to my statements.  As I said every (non black) person thinks this.  It would really do America a favor to just put this shit out there.  White people desperately want to know but we are just scared shitless of black people and other white people who will alienate us if we expressed these feelings.

PS I know I keep saying this but I am really not trying to upset you but I and America at large need to know.

At the very least I am sure you appreciate my candor.  At least do me the same favor.

        • Anonymous

LOL since you want to put out statistics put out how racists have low IQ’s. Also if you were so smart like you claim, you would know how one sided the media is, black women get more kidnapped than white women but the media is one sided and will only show white women.

Also I find it hilarious how you get upset over black history month when the rest is white history month. White history month is all year yet you aren’t tired of that? Also Native Americans are the poorest in America AGAIN the media tries to make it look like we are, over half of Black people are Middle Class like me and my parents for example. Also whites committed the most violent crimes in 2010 so what are you talking about? Also whites have always did hate crimes the most.

Also whites are on more welfare also what you don’t know (of course, your IQ is low plus what can you expect from a person that believes the media) is the average person on welfare stays on it for JUST 2 years.

        • Anonymous

Hmm, you love to throw out random data with nothing to back it up. First off, Blacks don’t cause more crime. Crime rates are the lowest they’ve been in decades, and the vast majority of any crimes Blacks are arrested for are nonviolent – War on Drugs, anyone, which, despite evidence that White middle-class families are just as likely, if not more so in some cases, to abuse drugs, continues to be waged in low-income neighborhoods with people of color. Percentage-wise, Whites only have Blacks beat by about two percent when it comes to welfare, as Blacks, Whites, and Latinos all have at least 33% or so that receive this service, and population-wise, Whites definitely outnumber Blacks in that regard. Most recipients are male, by the way, not female, and many are also employed.

“Black people on the other hand do require a constant PR campaign to convince everyone “hey black people aren’t so bad… see”.  Its a complete joke.”

Maybe because of Jim Crow, Al Jolson, D.W. Griffith, Jesse Helms, American Eugenics Movement… I mean, do I really have to continue? It’s obvious that your privileges as a person who’s always been accepted into American culture allow you to gloss over these glaring realities that Blacks faced in the past and in some respects, continue to confront presently. People such as yourself continue to use the actions of some people within a particular minority as an excuse to use blanket descriptors. But God forbid Rippa or any other minority figure do that to whites, even though he isn’t.

“reduce property values, are unequivocally racist (they hate pretty much everyone including other black people, especially if they are gay), don’t really pay much in taxes (i don’t have the figure in front of me so it doesnt go in the per capita list), and make schools and other public areas unsafe.”

Uh, someone forget about redlining and economic discrimination? Or how about NIMBY, the policy that allowed whites and corporations to throw their trash, toxic chemicals, and litter into segregated minority neighborhoods, which has a negative impact in certain areas that continues to this very day(Cancer Alley, for instance)? So Blacks are unequivocally racist, even though there are plenty of well-known Black Civil Rights leaders who were integrationists and preached Universal Acceptance? You also can’t use figures you can’t back up – especially vague and ridiculous claims such as the one you just made- as evidence. But yeah, you must be pretending Columbine never happened.

“Its not about being racist, just look at the numbers.”

It’s clearly about being racist, because when we look at the numbers your arguments don’t hold water.

“Think of it this way: if 90% of apples you ate made you sick, would you stop eating apples?  Same thing with black people, practically every time every time black people get together bad stuff goes down ie stabbing shooting what have you.”

Depends on the type of apples you were eating, as not all apples are grown nor taste the same. Wait, did I just blow your mind with your own analogy? As for your opinions about Black people, one could be equally reactionary like yourself and cite the public lynchings of Blacks by the KKK, the Holocaust, WW I and WW II, the Inquisition, the mass genocide of indigenous peoples – including the Aborigines- and countless other wars and conflicts, but you’d miss the point. All of us have our Hitlers and Pol Pots, but we also have our MLK’s and Martin Luthers, filled with love, understanding, and wisdom waiting to be shared to liberate the minds of the oppressed and challenge the ignorant like yourself.

      • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

haha i just googled HBCU and you’re right I totally should have known what that was (no fool’n).  My History of Africa professor made us go watch stomp the yard back when it was in theaters.  What a joke.  To be honest, the movie portrayed an HBCU (which is a little redundant) as an very hostile place and at no point in the movie did anyone do any studying.  Mostly just dancing around.

To be honest, telling it like it is or “keep’n it reel” is very cathartic.  I think I will become a regular visitor here.

If I can at least get one black person to think about race relations through the lense of reality, then I have done my job.  Of course by “done my job” I mean done something for society, because I am already gainfully employed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

Oh also, no one cares about black history month because every year its: “George Washington Carver invented peanuts… now gimme something!”  Yea we got it, he invented peanuts, that was like a hundred years ago, invent something else or give the holiday to Indian people.  They are always inventing computers and stuff.  The guy who invented the USB is Indian.  I like USB ports way more than peanut-anything.  Also the guy who invented 5-hour energy is Indian.  So far its 2 to 1.  Just saying…

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

Truth is, you don’t care about Black History Month because you hate Black people. Hell, you probably hate people of East Indian descent as well. But hey, that’s your sickness to carry. Hopefully you don’t find your sick self waking up in a hospital surrounded by nothing but people of color getting paid to keep you alive. Sadly iif that ever happened, someone like you may decide to commit suicide.

      • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

You are so dramatic, I would have had to live on mars under a rock to never had an indian doctor.  That just goes to show you aren’t ready for the truth.  This is what every person thinks they are just too afraid to say anything.

To be honest, my college of about 5,000 had over 1,000 international students from over 100 countries and i’ve worked in hong kong and london for a year each.  Trust me I get along fine with other races as long as they expect to be judged the quality of their work.

You may also find this interesting all the international kids from Africa COULD NOT STAND “African-Americans”.  They couldnt believe how our black people act in public and generally live their lives.  Another thing they found particularly annoying was when the malcolm x types were all “mama africa the cradle of life BS” when they have no idea what africa is like.

Once again, I am not trying to insult anyone but it is time black people got a wake up call.  This is what the world thinks of you and everyone is too afraid to say anything to your face but behind your backs everyone is just shrugs, some laugh, but mostly people are just apathetic because they know if they say anything they will get in the worst kind of trouble.  This PC crap with black people is the worst case of group think in the history of the world.  It just hurts black people in the long run.

        • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

I know it’s hard to believe, but Black folks are doing great things. Hell, our president is BLACK. But I understand, in your narrow worldview it’s impossible to imagine and or accept this fact.

          • http://www.facebook.com/TerryAshwill Terrence Ashwill

What has he done that was so great… seriously?

And you want to know what else white people think?  In the last election we were so desperate for someone to step into the presidency and fix this country not only were we considering a woman but also a black guy.

We gave a black president a try and we are no better off then before.

            Thats what white people think.

Another black guy won’t be president for 100 years after this little experiment.

But please tell me what Obama has done that has clearly been a success?

          Dear Terrence,

Had black history truly been shoved down your throat all your life, you’d know more about black history than just George Washington Carver “inventing peanuts”. Perhaps you’d know that George Washington Carver didn’t actually “invent” peanuts (he discovered 300 ways to use agricultural products, a pivotal development critical to the sustenance of America’s farm industry and economy). Perhaps you’d also be familiar with the struggles of Assata Shakur, or the writings of Zora Neale Hurston, and the legacy of Ernest E. Just.

I’m almost certain you’re not familiar with any of these stories. I can tell because your commentary illustrates a belief that all black people are demonstrably the same. Furthermore, you think that “plenty of black people owned slaves” (I’d love for you to cite your sources on that one). And you believe that black ppl are ultimately to blame for the Trans-atlantic slave trade – as if Europeans were honest with African slave traders, or didn’t enslave the slave traders themselves.

My dear Terrence, racism is born out of ignorance, and ignorance is nothing to be proud of. Get educated.

Btw… I’m not trying to insult you ;-)

          Sincerely,
          Choqlate

You’re correct, white people don’t give a shit about “black history”.

Neither do Asians or Hispanics or Native Americans or Middle Easterners.

Even most black people don’t give a shit about “black history”.

Thank you. I just think someone should tell the black people. It’s called tough love. They are the joke of the planet and need to just work together.

I think that white guy dressing up in black-face was as clueless an act as the students were clueless about Black History Month.

I was amused that when he asked the white students for an historic Black figure, none of the mentioned President Barack Obama, or maybe that was edited out.

Black-face is insulting, no matter why white people do it.  There is no argument to be made that his interviews were furthered by his makeup.  The opposite is true. He might have gotten some far more frank and interesting comments if his interviewees believed they were solely among white people.

What I learned from his brown-face schtick is that when white people see a man whose face is brown, they believe the man has a brown face.  Aside from a brown face, there is nothing readily perceptible that all brown people have (or lack) that would make it possible for whites to distinguish a fake black man from a real one.  Period.

Whites should not be ashamed for believing he was Black.  Instead, HE should be ashamed for believing that there was some universal Black characteristic, other than skin color, that whites would and should immediately recognize.

    • Anonymous

Whites should not be ashamed for believing he was Black.  Instead, HE should be ashamed for believing that there was some universal Black characteristic, other than skin color, that whites would and should immediately recognize.”

Definitely disagree here, as that’s not what he implied. That makeup was barely even passable and poorly implemented. If you look at his hands, his palms, which he uses alot, are also clearly disproportionately lighter in some areas than normal, not to mention the powdery texture the makeup leaves on his skin. At the very least, it’s an obvious sign that they truly weren’t paying any attention or were literally too ignorant to tell that he wasn’t Black, which I find disturbing. We can easily look at the images of high fashion models in Europe and tell when they’re in Blackface; why not here in America as well, where the tradition gained prominence? I do agree that his use of it was rather peculiar and that it would’ve been interesting hearing their opinions if he were not engaged in that facade.

Hey, Terence, a little advice, one white person to another:

    Shut the fuck up.

And while you’re at it, LISTEN.Try to understand what people are saying. Learn at least a little about the facts before spouting off.

Just so you know, you are way the fuck out of your weight class. You’re not strutting your stuff, you’re exposing your ignorance. It would be faster and more efficient–and accomplish exactly the same thing–if you opened and closed with “I’ve got nothin’.”

You’re not even being useful by confirming anyone’s worst suspicions. Everyone already knows the world is filled with hateful, fact-free white people who like to talk about shit they don’t understand.

    • http://rippdemup.com/ RiPPa

      Well said!

      • Anonymous

        Thanks!.Just saying what I see.

But I was wrong about one thing. Not “everyone” knows how many hateful, fact-free white people there are. None of the colorblind post-racialists seem to have noticed.  It’s hard to see what’s around you with your head in the sand. But then, isn’t that the point of bending over and sticking your head in the dirt in the first place?

I guess they figure it’s okay to be a fact-free white person who likes to talk about shit without understanding it–as long as you believe your intentions are good.

Would you ever expect a rapist(White America past)  to take part in celebrating the day that the people(blacks)  whom  he/she(White America)  raped is no longer or still fighting to be no longer under his/her(White America) control? All it would do is force them(US)  to remember the harm that he/she(America) has done and how evil he/she (America) was/is for having done that? Not willingly and halfheartedly.  But a rapist will forever celebrate the rape(holocaust) that another(Germany) has done to  others; especially if the others(jews) are prominent and respectable members of its community.

It’s not about race, it’s about attitude. You need the book “The Power Of Positive Thinking”. The world needs this– blacks, whites, purples or whoever -with A crappy, ignorant, trashy attitude is a waste of a human life. Haters will realize this at some point. If all humans were the same color- there would be some other thing that would single a group out– it’s black or white people!! It’s attitude and demeanor!!
